The Union Catholic girls blitzed the field and obliterated the New Jersey record when they threw down the second fastest time in U.S. high school indoor history in the distance medley relay at the VA Showcase on Friday night at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia.
Junior Sophia Thompson, junior Sydney Chadwick, freshman Abby Robisky and junior Paige Sheppard combined to run 11:18.75!!!
That time destroyed the New Jersey record of 11:41.12 that Southern Regional ran to finish first at the 2009 Nike Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Center on Boston. And the Vikings just missed breaking the national record of 11:17.50 set by Cuthbertson of North Carolina at the 2024 New Balance National Championships at The TRACK at New Balance in Boston.
Thompson led off for UC with a 3:29.88 carry on the 1,200, Chadwick followed with a 56.15 for 400, Robisky ran 2:11.36 on the 800, and then Sheppard, the national champ in the mile last spring, finished it off with a 4:41.37 anchor leg.
At the New Balance Nationals last June at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Thompson and Sheppard also bookended the DMR when Union Catholic finished first and shattered the national outdoor record by running 11:12.20.
Will the Vikings add the indoor national DMR record to their collection this season?
After this performance, it seems like it's just a matter of time!!
