Giordano Wins Discus At NB Nationals With Monster Throw

Layla Giordano of Old Tappan moved all the way up to No. 3 in NJ history in the discus when she exploded with a massive bomb of 170-4 to finish first at the New Balance National Championships on Friday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

This remarkable performance by Giordano comes a day after the junior won the shot put (43-3.25) and discus (159-7) at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. The 159-7 on Thursday was a PR at the time for Giordano, who obliterated that on Friday by nearly 11 feet!!!! How awesome is that!!!

Giordano won the title by more than four feet over runner-up Morgan Graham, a senior at Grassfield High in Virginia, who was second with a PR of 165-10.

Giordano surpassed her PR four times in the competition.

After an opening throw of 146-3, she unloaded a 160-0 before taking the lead for good with a 167-10 on her third throw. Her fourth attempt was 159-0, and then came her 170-4 on her fifth attempt. With the victory secured, she threw 138-1 on her last throw.

Giordano's 170-4 is No. 5 in the country this season, and it puts her right behind two legendary throwers in NJ history,  Alyssa Wilson of Donovan Catholic (a state record 182-0 in 2017), and Jocelyn White of Delsea (172-2 in 2004) They are the only two girls who have ever thrown the discus further in NJ high school history than Giordano.

Giordano is also now No. 2 all-time in NJ history among juniors, trailing just the 175-1 that Wilson threw in 2016.
