Seton Hall Prep Breaks State Record In 800 SMR

Seton Hall Prep tuned up for the Penn Relays by smashing the state record in the 800-meter sprint medley relay at Saturday's HCTCA Relays in Kearny.

Darren Burton, Jaylen McClain, Xavier Donaldson and Ryan Matulonis combined to run a US No. 10 All-Time 1:30.02, the fastest time in the nation this season, to take down the state record of 1:30.09 that Willingboro ran to finish first at the 2007 Nike National Championships at North Carolina A&T University.

Burton and McClain combined to run 21.0 on the first two 100 legs, Donaldson split 21.1 on his 200 carry, and Matulonis sealed the deal by dropping a 47.6 on the 400 anchor leg. Seton Hall Prep won the race by a whopping 11seconds over runner-up Hudson Catholic.

Seton Hall Prep's 1:30.02 is the fastest time in the country since Harvard Westlake of California ran 1:29.82 at the 2019 Arcadia Invitational. In case you're wondering, the national record in the 800 SMR is 1:28.43 by Long Beach Poly of California at the 2007 Arcadia Invitational.
