Nwosu Launches NJ No. 1/US No. 7 Shot Put Bomb

Results

Jason Nwosu of Delsea unloaded a massive personal best and school record bomb of 61-11 to take over the state lead and move into the No. 7 spot nationally in the shot put at Tuesday's Cherokee Throw Down meet in Marlton.

Nwosu, a senior, improved his PR by more than 4 feet!!! His previous best was 57-10 at the Tri-County Conference meet on Dec. 28 at the Bennett Center in Toms River. And prior to this season, his PR was 54-2, so he's improved his PR by an astounding seven feet, nine inches since last June. That's simply amazing!!!

Nwosu opened up the competition with a 55-9.50 on his first attempt. Then after two straight fouls, he uncorked his 61-11 on his fourth and final throw. Only four throws were permitted.

The 61-11 by Nwosu puts him at the top of the state rankings this season, bumping Fabian Gonzalez of Southern Regional from the top spot. Santiago is now No. 2 with the 60-4.50 he threw at the Rebel Field Meet on Jan. 11 at the Bennett Center.

Nwosu's 61-11 broke Delsea's indoor record of 58-8.75 set in 2018 by Bill Goldsborough, and surpassed Delsea's all-time record (indoors and outdoors combined) of 61-6 that was set at the 2013 Tri-County Conference Championships by Josh Awotunde, who is currently one of the best throwers in the world.

This past summer, Awotunde placed fifth at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a 71-8, which ranks him No. 44 in world history, No. 19 in U.S. history, and it was the ninth best throw in the world for the year.
