Boys Group Championship Preview: What to Watch For

Group 2

2019 Group 2 Leaders - Sectional Merge Leaders

Delsea, the SJ champ, is as well rounded and balanced as any team in the state, capable of picking up points from just about anywhere on the track and in the field.

But Delsea's biggest edge is in the pole vault.

Delsea went 1-2-3 on the way to its third straight sectional title as Nico and Marco Morales both cleared 15-0 and Ryan Gillard made 13-6. The Nico Morales is NJ#2 this season at 15-7, and his brother Marco is NJ#3 at 15-6. They are the first teammates to go over 15-0 in the same season since 1980.

The pole vault should be one of the most exciting events of this meet as the Morales brothers clash with Liam Landau of Pascack Hills, the indoor Meet of Champions winner who set the Group 2 record last year by making 15-7 1/2. Landau has a PR of 15-9.

One of the biggest stars in the country will be competing in this meet, Devin Hart of Point Pleasant Boro, the New Balance National Indoor champ in the two-mile a 5-time Meet of Champions winner.

The Stanford-bound Hart will go for a three-peat in the 3,200. Depending on how he attacks the race, his could shatter his Group 2 record of 9:07.40 that he ran in 2017. Hart has run a NJ#1 9:01.90 this season and owns a PR of 8:53.36 for two miles.

Also keep an eye on James Bell of West Side, who became the first jumper in the state this season to make 6-10 last week. The senior has a great shot to become the first NJ jumper to make 7-0 since Markquese Bell of Bridgeton made 7-0 at the Cape Atlantic League Championships on 2016.
