Mario Heslop, the 2019 Indoor MileSplit50 Athlete of the Year, ran a time of 10.33 (NWI) to win the Central Group 4 Sectionals 100m finals on Friday in Howell, NJ.  A continuation of a monster senior year for the Franklin Township star.

There was no wind gauge, but if it had been a wind legal run it would have taken down the State 100m dash record of 10.35 that Jamar Ervin of Camden ran to win the Meet of Champions in 2000. Ervin's 10.35 had a wind legal +2.0 reading and still stands as the standard.

Heslop's time is still up there in the record book though, now third all-time in all-conditions. He is behind Danny Johnson of Rahway, who still holds the all-conditions and wind aided record in the 100m with a 10.30 at the 2001 Meet of Champions which was wind aided with reading of +2.2 meters per second, as well as Joe Dawkins of Hackensack who ran a 10.31 (NWI) at the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League meet in 1995.

In a text message with Bill Bruno, the NJSIAA Assistant Director who handles track and field, he stated that wind gauges will be used at the Group and Meet of Champions meets.

This past indoor season, Heslop went off in the dashes tying the 55m state record of 6.26 and breaking the 200m state record with a 20.90 that won him a New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship and is US#4 all-time indoors. He also led the state with a 49.23 in the 400m dash.

Heslop has committed to North Carolina A&T State University for this coming school year.
