Athing Mu Earns Silver at Youth Olympic Games

On Sunday in Buenos Aires, Argentina Athing Mu representing the USA finished second in the 800m during the Youth Olympic Games running 2:05.23. This was after a 2:08.01 to advance out of the first stage of the event. The New Jersey mid-distance star was only behind Keely Small of Australia who posted a 2:04.76 to win gold.

At only 16 years of age this was Mu's first chance at some invaluable international experience and she stepped up to the challenge with her silver medal performance. A great sign of things to come as this very likely won't be the last international competition the Trenton Track Club talent sees.

"My first international racing experience couldn't have gone any better!", Mu reflected on twitter, "Proud to be able to represent USA and also being the runner up at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in the 800m. I'm ready for what this next year's season shall bring me!"

This was the next step in the progression for Mu as she has already excelled on the national stage winning New Balance Nationals titles in the 800m both indoor and outdoor. Her career best 800m performance coming during the 2018 New Balance Nationals Outdoor run where she posted 2:04.51, the time is third in New Jersey state history and a sophomore state record. She also nearly won four gold medals at the AAU Junior Olympic Games this past August, earning wins in the 1500m 4:38.78, 800m 2:07.54, and 400m 52.83. Then finishing the meet in a close second running 24.07 for the 200m final.
