Abby Loveys of Randolph and the Pope John boys opened their seasons with huge victories at the Big Purple Wave Mania Invitational on Saturday at Warwick Valley in New York.
Loveys, who won the 1,600 at the NJ Outdoor Meet of Champions last spring and won the Group 4 title and was a Foot Locker finalist last year in XC, ran away with the girls title in 17:27.6, more than 30 seconds faster than runner-up Sarah Trainor of FDR (18:01.9). Led by Loveys, Randolph placed second to Warwick Valley, 47-96.
In the boys competition, Pope John averaged 17:02 and edged St. Anthony's of N.Y., 67-72, to capture the Division 1 title. Liam McHale led the charge for Pope John by placing second in 16:00.7 on the 3.09-mile course. Also for PJ, Andy Domasky was 11th (17:02.5), Charles Dasilva 15th (17:15), Tim Spatola 18th in 17:21.5, and Eion McCLain was 25th in 17:31.2
Don Bosco Prep, behind runner-up Mike Dua (16:11.5) placed fifth in the boys Division 2 race with 151 points.
