Sophomore Tierra Hooker Moves Up the All-Time State List
Watch out national rankings New Jersey is taking over the high jump. Tierra Hooker of Timber Creek cleared 5-10 for the first time indoors, tied for US#2 this season. That height set the meet and Ocean Breeze high school venue record during the Ocean Breeze Invitational in Staten Island, NY over the weekend.
She joins Jenna Rogers of Rutherford, who also cleared 5-10 twice this season, in a four way tie for third all-time in New Jersey indoor high jump history. Both girls rank tied for second nationally this season, and they are only sophomores.
The state record is a long standing 6-00 clearance held by Tatiana Smolin of Randolph since 1985. Hooker took a strong attempt at that state record height as seen in the video above. Her previous indoor best was 5-08 set recently at the NJSIAA State Relays, her outdoor PR is 5-10 which earned her second at the Meet of Champions in 2017.
Things are Picking Up for New Jersey Jumpers
The New Jersey high jump scene has spiced up rather quickly this past year. Before this season New Jersey had not seen a girl over the 5-08 bar indoors since 2015. Last spring Rogers cleared a state record 6-00.75 to win New Balance Nationals Outdoor as a freshman and five girls including Hooker at 5-10 were over the 5-08 bar. That was the best field of girls outdoor jumpers since 2012 when Megan Kirschling of West Deptford cleared 5-10.5 and four girls were over 5-08.
