On Sunday at New Balance Nationals Indoor Old Bridge senior Rey Rivera finished second running 1:50.04 in the 800 meter, an event with historically strong ties to New Jersey athletes.
His performance is now US#4 all-time indoors joining two other athletes from the Garden State in the top five. Ben Malone of Pascack Valley ranks third at 1:49.94 and national record holder Robby Andrews of Matawan, who's 2009 standard lives another day, recorded 1:49.21. All of these times coming from the National Championships.
Rivera who was in fifth at the mid-race point made a strong surge the final lap and a half of the competition edging out Brandon McGorty from Virginia for second. Cameron Cooper of Michigan finished first with a time of 1:49.46, just .25 off Robby Andrew's 1:49.21 high school national record.
The three New Jersey greats are now ranked together in the top five all-time. Rivera has closed his high school indoor career and looks strong for his senior outdoor season, the star has signed to Georgetown University next fall.
