Pope John XXIII senior Anna Campbell continued her great season by winning the Non-Public A championship on Saturday with a time of 19:16. That is by far the best time she's run at the historic Holmdel course and ranked her 20th overall in the meet merge. This is the first Pope John XXIII winner since two time champion Lara Heigis took the title in 2006 with a 19:22.
Anna Campbell wasn't alone up front either, her teammate Abigail Post finished second with a 19:28 out battling the defending champion Nora Honrath of St. John Vianney to the the line. This gave them an early lead and solid position in the team scoring.
Pope John's lead wasn't enough however as Red Bank Catholic came storming back led by Emily Dunn and and Maddy Kopec finishing seventh at 20:08 and eighth at 20:13 respectively. The RBC girls kept the momentum from there splitting only 48 seconds between their scoring five for 67 points and the championship. Pope John finished second overall with 76 points and a young Union Catholic third at 102.
This is Red Bank Catholic's 19th state title, the most among all girls schools at Groups. They last won in 2014 and have five championships over the past seven years.
The winning squad consisted of Emily Dunn seventh 20:08, Maddy Kopec eighth 20:13, Michelle O'Malley 15th 20:35, Caitlin O'Hare 19th 20:50, Danielle Hayes 23rd 20:56, Danielle Roma 24th 21:04, and Tara Ryan 41st 21:53.
