Conversational Notes
Kellert - Well I can't say there is a overwhelming favorite for this showdown, but having to pick a winner I'm going with Matt Grossman. He was in a stacked Group 4 race last weekend which may account for pushing to be #15 all-time at Holmdel with his 15:32. He faces similar circumstances this weekend, and has shown he has the well to draw from if need be. Joe Dragon looked so collected last week running the fourth fastest time of the day at 15:52, he could break this race open early and potentially run away with it. Aaron Groff was a pre-season favorite of mine to be in the mix for an MOC title and he hasn't shown anything to doubt that idea. The two that I could have ranked entirely too low on this list are Blaise Ferro and Joshua Clark, Ferro burst back onto the scene last week after a somewhat quiet regular season and going the other way Clark has six impressive wins so far. They could both turn over my predictions on race day.
Stranieri - This race is going to be very entertaining. Joshua Clark has been a man on a mission this season, has the fastest overall 5k time in the state and looked very strong while winning the Group 3 race last weekend. Speaking of who looked strong last weekend, Joe Dragon looked excellent in winning the Group 2 race. He looked effortless down the home stretch and even had plenty of time to celebrate. He made 15:52 at Holmdel seem extremely easy and I think he has plenty more left in the tank to drop an even bigger time this weekend. Matt Grossman already has dropped a big time as his 15:32 from last weekends Group 4 race leads the state at Holmdel this season. He narrowly edged Aaron Groff, who was right behind in 15:37. And lastly there is Blaise Ferro, who made his triumphant return last weekend in big way by dropping a 15:49 at Holmdel and he looked strong doing it. I believe he'll be better this weekend than he was last. This race will come down to these five and I wouldn't be shocked to see all of them coming out of the woods together. I'm hesitant to pick a winner in this race given how close I think it will be, but after watching Dragon look so relaxed last week, I'll give him the slight edge. Really I think any one of the 5 mentioned can take this thing.
