NJClippings: Briana Gess Finishes Freshman Year on a High Note

The Haddonfield High School freshman, who played varsity basketball in the winter, won a state 1600m title in the spring.

Despite a mid-season ailment that threatened to derail her spring campaign, Haddonfield freshman Briana Gess won the New Jersey State Meet of Champions 1600m on June 4 to complete a sensational first year of high school. Her time of 4:45.97 is the fastest in the country by a freshman in 2014. Last fall, Gess won the state cross country title and was the first freshman girl, in ninth, at the Foot Locker nationals. In the winter, even with reduced training while she played basketball, she anchored her Haddonfield team to second at the New Balance Indoor Nationals distance medley relay with a 4:48 1600m split.
