Work hard, get better!

For Boys Track parents:
Below I have placed some helpful information for parents and athletes. Included there you will find our team policies and some valuable information to get the most out of this season. I used to have a meeting with parents on an evening shortly before the competitive season. Not everyone could make the one-time meeting so a number of parents had to find their way through the season by emailing me or relying on parents who had boys in the program from previous seasons. I hope you will find that the information addresses most of your needs. As always, if you have a question don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Practices:
The Boys Spring Track team will practice each school day from 3 PM – 5 PM. We will meet in Room 015 to begin practice.
We will not practice on days when school or after-school activities are cancelled due to inclement weather.
During Spring recess we will practice according to the attached schedule. We will return to regular after-school practice on Monday, April 16, 2012. It is assumed that you will attend each day’s scheduled practice session. If you will not be able to attend practice any day, you must have your parent call or email Coach Heidecker to inform him that it is with their permission that you miss practice.

Meets:
Not all athletes will participoate in every meet. Athletes will travel to and from all meets with the team. You may get a ride home with your parent if you have filed a Travel Release Form with the Athletic Director at NHHS at least 24 hours before the meet.

General rules:
All North Hunterdon High School and NHVRHSD rules are in effect.

Team rules:
Do nothing in school, at practice or at a meet which will reflect negatively upon your parents, you, your teammates, your coaches or your school.

The daily workouts and the events in which you compete during a meet are non-negotiable.

If you are not following the team’s program for the day, you will be asked to leave and your parent will be notified.

If the athletic trainer assigns you rehab for an injury, you must report rehab in the ATR by 2:30PM on school days. Saturday rehab will be scheduled by the trainer. Late arrivals will be denied rehab and will be sent home from practice for the day.

If you accrue three missed practices without your parent contacting the coach, you will be removed from the roster of the winter track team, your parent will be notified and any outstanding equipment is to be returned to the coach immediately.

Coaching decisions regarding individual athletes will be made with first consideration given to the team and its principles.

Track and field is a mentally and physically demanding sport that challenges the athlete to develop to his full potential through discipline, hard work and a focus on consistent improvement. This understanding is the backbone of our program. Development and improvement will be the priority in all of our efforts. Winning can become a natural outcome of steady improvement. More importantly, building strength, speed, physical conditioning, competitive and team spirit, as well as the fulfillment of an athlete’s potential are the most valuable rewards a team member can earn. For these focused athletes, their personal rules are aligned with the expectations that accompany individual and team sports. Team rules need to exist for those who may wish to survive in the margin between team membership and the individual’s convenience. Train, commit, improve and take pride in your development.

HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR ATHLETES AND PARENTS:

Due to the fact that some meets focus upon varsity, novice or freshman competition, not all athletes will run in every meet. Have your son ask the coach whether the athlete will be slated for competition in a given meet.

Uniforms- Each boy will receive a uniform. Take the uniform home. It is due back at the end of the season. I will collect these at the end of the competitive season.

Behaviors in school- Be a “true” athlete. I want the boys to regard themselves as athletes in everything they do. It has been rare, but boys who cannot meet the expectations will be given time off from the team and parents will be notified.

Keeping up grades in school is a priority. Stay ahead of your school work. Extra help/make-up work policy- school comes first. Go to the extra help or make-up session. Then, bring a note from your teacher that lets the coach know the time you left your teacher.

Practice attire – training footwear, sweat pants, gloves, hats, inhalers, sweatshirts. Dress to stay warm outside in the late winter season. A watch would be helpful. Athletes who wish to purchase spikes for racing should be sure to bring those shoes to practice each day. We will not wear the spikes, generally, for practice but there are often drills that should be completed in race condition. If you have questions about footwear, speak to the trainer or a reputable footwear supplier.

Diet and nutrition – plenty of water, try to guide the athlete toward wholesome foods, sleep and rest are as important as work

If you notice the athlete is: not eating, not sleeping, lethargic, complains of leg or back problems, etc. - call Coach H.
