Matt Grossman of Millburn entered a race that boasted an immense amount of talent on Saturday, and do you know what he did? He stood up to the challenge and ran the #15 all-time Holmdel performance with a 15:32 for the Group 4 state championship. This is the school's fifth individual title and first since 2011 when Blake Udland won running 15:48. Cherry Hill East senior Aaron Groff was right behind him at the mile, two mile, and finish in second with 15:37. He is still a contender for the Meet of Champions title this Saturday as well and his low place helped his team to a second place 81 point finish in what was an even deeper team race.
Old Bridge was the pick to win heading in with their well oiled machine of a season so far and they handled the expectations. With 54 points an average of 16:30 and an impressive top five split of only 19 seconds they won the Group 4 title and posted the best team performance of the meet according to the merge... and our state rankings poll for that matter. The team was led by senior Gerard Gill in 10th with a time of 16:21. This is Old Bridge's first boys team title since 2008 and their fifth overall.
Group 4 took up both of the wildcard team spots and holds nine of the individual wildcards heading to the Meet of Champions.
