Following Jesse Brown’s victory at the Ocean County Championships in the shot put, NJRunners caught up with him.

The fourth and final flight of the males’ shot put was showcased by three throwers in particular during the Ocean County Championship on January 17, at the John Bennett Indoor Sports Complex. Central Regional’s Jesse Brown, Toms River East’ Gilligan Greenlow and Pinelands’ Alex Potterton, made the varsity competition a close one. Heading into the finals, Greenlow was the leader at 48-05.00, only four inches further than both Brown and Potterton. However, in the end, Brown proved he only needed one more throw in the finals to pull ahead with gold at 48-11.25.

“I really didn’t have any set expectations heading into today’s throws,” said Brown. “I just wanted to go out and beat what I threw last time and I did that.”

This particular meet, being a county championship, the top eight throwers from the initial flights move on to a final flight and are granted an additional three throws. Brown was the only thrower out of the top six to actually capitalize on the extra throws granted through the final round.

“It felt good to be able to pull the win out in the end,” said Brown. “Having other throwers like Gilligan around really pushes you to throw further and that’s what helped me in the end.”

Following Brianna Young’s victory at the Ocean County Championships in the shot put, NJRunners caught up with her.

The Ocean County Championships held on January 17, at the John Bennett Indoor Sports Complex, showcased some excellent shot putting from the female’s division. The gold went to Brianna Young of Barnegat who had a small, but comfortable lead over Manchester’s Chandler Copeland. Young ended the night with a toss of 39-04.00 which put her in more than 02-00.00 in front of Copeland’s 36-11.25.

“I wanted to get first tonight, that’s really what I wanted,” said Young. “I wanted to throw decent enough to win it, and all my throws leading up to my winning one made me feel confident.”

Young plans to go back out and practice as she normally would until her next meet. Drills and weight training are what she’s going to work on in order to prepare herself to top her PB of 40-11.50.

“I’m going to train at a natural pace like I always have,” said Young. “Training along with having an attitude of going out and expecting to win, will surely get you where you want to be.”
