Following Manchester’s victory at the Group II Females’ Relay in the shot put, NJRunners caught up with Manchester throwers, Chandler Copeland and Kiana Guthridge.

“We expected to do a little better than we did, usually she’s at 38 and I’m at 36,” said Guthridge. “I guess the pressure just got to us a little this time.”

Manchester pulled away the gold on the very last throw of the meet. Guthridge’s best throw was her second toss at 33-04.25 while Copeland’s best toss before her third try was 35-04.75. Earlier in the final flight, Samone Jones of Bridgeton had landed her best throw of the night with 35-04.25, which actually put Bridgeton in the lead at the time. When Copeland answered back with her final toss of 36-11.00, she helped to put Manchester out in front by 00-05.25.

“Our throws weren’t the best today,” said Copeland. “The nerves of competing at states just built up and hurt our throws, but at least we threw just good enough to win tonight.”

Now that the state relays are officially over, the Manchester throwers are looking to take the non-relay meets by force. They will get back to practice this week and look execute this Thursday when they return to the circle once again.

“We expect to take first, second and third, on Thursday,” said Guthridge. “We’re all like neck and neck with each other, so we’re going to continue to work really hard, and I think we got it.”

“We put a lot of work into our practices every day,” said Copeland, “Hopefully we’ll be able to show it off in our throws next week.”
