PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Seannah Parsons of Randolph seemed to be on the verge of winning the girls' triple jump at the 130th Penn Relays on Thursday at historic Franklin Field.
But then Zavien Bernard of Hydel in Jamaica soared 41-10.50 with a wind-aided (3.1 meters per second) on her final attempt to take the lead away from Parsons, who had led throughout the entire competition.
Parsons, the Indoor Meet of Champions winner in the triple jump, had one more attempt to regain the lead, but couldn't quite top Howard's mark and wound up second with a 41-7.25. Because she finsihed as the top American, Parsons, competing on her future home track, received a prestigious gold watch.
This isn't the first time Parsons clashed with Bernard, and it won't be the last.
At the 53rd Carifta Games in St. George's Grenada earlier this month, Parsons, competing for Trinidad and Tobago, finished first in the Under-20 Division with a leap of 43-0.50, No. 2 in NJ history, and Howard was fifth.
They will meet again at the U-20 World Championships in August at Hayward Field in Oregon.
Stay tuned!!!
