NJIT Men Place First; Women Take Second at Hofstra Invitational

BETHPAGE, NY
– The NJIT cross country teams opened up its 2010 season at the Fifth Annual Hofstra Invitational Saturday afternoon at Bethpage State Park.

 

The format of the race had a different look, as the meet was a 2x6000 relay meet.  Each school had several two-runner relay teams with each runner completing 6K in alternating 3K legs.

 

The NJIT men finished first with 11 points followed by host Hofstra (10).  The Highlanders top relay team consisted of returnee Brian Mendez and newcomer Moheb Thomas, who took second overall with a time of 40:12.68.

 

Freshman Daniel Rondon and Jonathan Daudelin placed fourth (41:18.64) followed by co-captain Joseph Ju and #Miguel Tlatepa (41:41.78).

 

On the women's side, freshman Breanne Hollenbach and Ewelina Marut placed first overall with a time of 48:20.00, two-minutes ahead of Hofstra's top relay team.

 

Newcomer Catie Cohen and Vanessa Escalera took fourth (50:57) while Amanda Hefferan and Megan Higgins who have been plagued with injuries added a seventh-place finish.

 

The NJIT women will return to action on Saturday at the Fordham Invitational.  The men will have a week off to prepare for the NJIT Classic on September 19.  Saint Peter's, Long Island and St. Francis (NY) will participate at the Classic.
