NJIT Places 29 Student-Athletes on the 2009-10 Winter/Spring Great West Conference All-Academic Team

NAPERVILLE, IL –
NJIT placed 29 student-athletes in six sports on the 2009-10 Winter/Spring Great West Conference All-Academic team, Director of Media Relations Jacque Cottrell announced Friday.

 

In all, 240 Great West Conference athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average. The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective teams' contests.

 

Using the institutions' most recent GPA, the student-athletes are selected by each member institution's sports information director, with approval from the faculty athletic representative and the head coach. First-year students and transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.

Baseball ..

Steven Ace (RHP, junior, Beach Lake, PA ) … industrial engineering major. … cumulative GPA 3.556. …veteran pitcher. ... appeared in 20 games. ... posted a 2-3 record with one save in 2010.

 

James D'Aloia (CF junior, Lakewood, NJ) … mechanical engineering major. … cumulative GPA 3.565. … started 40 games in center field for the Highlanders. … batted .275 with 41 hits, 21 runs, 16 runs batted in, eight doubles and two home runs.

 

Kyle McCarthy (1B, senior, Collingswood, NJ) … mathematical sciences major. … graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and was a Valedictorian of NJIT's Class of 2010. … the lone senior on this year's NJIT team and was a 4-year member of the Highlanders … appeared in 29 games this season, starting 23 at first base.

 

Jeffrey Pizzi (RF, sophomore, Marlboro, NJ) … business major. … cumulative GPA 3.415. … one of three players to finish with a batting average about .300. … Pizzi, who played through injuries most of the year, finished at .304 with 42 hits and nine doubles.

 

Matt Tomczyk (2B, junior, Ringwood, NJ) … mechanical engineering major. … cumulative GPA 3.245. … shared the RBI lead with sophomore Bryan Bleakley. … Tomczyk got four of his 29 RBI on sacrifice flies, tops on the team. … exceeded the old school record with 55 games played in 2010 (record was 50; 2010 teammate Teddy Bickert had 56).

 

 

Men's Basketball …

Sammy Schickel (guard, sophomore, Charlotte, NC) … business major. … cumulative GPA 3.708. … missed the entire 2008-09 season due to injury … increased his contribution in 2009-10 as he regained his basketball rhythm and was a valuable player off the bench in conference play. … career-high 18 pts (7-10 FG, 4-6 3pt GG) vs. Utah Valley (1/30).

 

Teddy Schickel (guard, sophomore, Charlotte, NC) …business major. … cumulative GPA 3.662. … made his first 2009-10 start at Houston Baptist -- scored a season high 6 pts (3-4 FGs) … career-high 6 assists vs. Chicago State (1/23).

 

Dan Stonkus (center, senior, Monmouth Junction, NJ) … mechanical engineering major. … cumulative GPA 3.700. … only player to be on all four NJIT Division I teams. …closed his career with 107 games played, 94 starts, 371 points, 482 rebounds and 144 blocked shots. The 482 rebounds and 145 blocks are the most in NJIT's Division I era and his blocks total ranks fourth in the program's overall history.

 

Women's Basketball …

Jessica Gerald (guard, junior, Woolwich Township, NJ) … business major. … cumulative GPA 3.282. … all-Great West Conference first team. ... ranked second among individual leaders in points per game (15.4) while leading the Highlanders with 446 points. …eight double-figure games (two 30-point and 20-point performances). ...  recorded double-digits in 21 out of 29 games with a season-high 34 points vs. Texas-Pan American (2/20).

 

Katie Piekielski (guard, senior, Atco, NJ) … biology major. … cumulative GPA 3.727. … Played in every game but two (27), including seven starts. ... posted four double-digit scoring games (all 10 points). ... ranks sixth all-time at NJIT with 107 games played. ...final career totals: 561 career points, 297 rebounds and 114 assists. 

 

Ivana Seric (forward, junior, Split, Croatia) … only player to start every game (29) in 2009-10. ... team leader in assists (90) and blocks (19). ... seven double-digit and two double-double games.

 

Women's Tennis …

Fanny Aizier (senior, Aix-en-Provence, France) …computer science major. … cumulative GPA 3.394. … finished with a 16-3 dual match record (all at fifth singles)  in her final season at NJIT. . ... career-record was 56-19.

 

Ana Lidon (junior, Seville, Spain) … business major. … 3.418 cumulative GPA. … 14-10 (8-8 at #2 singles; 6-2 at #3 singles) including a 14-7 dual match doubles record.

 

Anine Lovdal (sophomore, Norway) …interior design major. … cumulative GPA 3.588. … posted a 9-16 dual match singles record, finishing 8-9 at fourth singles.
