Track and Field Competes at the 15th Annual Monmouth Season Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ –
The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams recorded numerous individual performances Saturday afternoon at the 15th Annual Monmouth Season Opener on Kessler Field.

 

Featured at the two-day event was 17 Division I women's track and field teams and 15 men's track and field teams.

 

Sophomore middle distance runner Vanessa Escalera finished in the top 10 of the women's 800 meter run setting a new NJIT school-record with a time of 2:25.05.  Escalera was also part of the record breaking women's sprint medley relay which consisted of Lesley Hendricks, Megan Higgins and Nicole Kerrison.  The team finished eighth with a time of 4:38.93.

 

Leading the Highlanders in the men's weight hammer throw was Josh Dolisca with a distance of 128-00 (39.01m).  Dolisca now holds the NJIT school-record in the hammer throw.

 

Freshman Adam Morgan broke the NJIT freshman record in the men's 800 meter run at 2:01.48 while classmate Tim Esposito also set a freshman record in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.55.

 

Head coach Al Alonso stated, “Both squads performed well considering we are training through our first four meets in preparation for the Great West Conference Championships.”

 

The NJIT track and field teams will be back in action on Saturday at the Wagner Invitational.
