Saturday's Results
VERMILLION, SD – The NJIT men's and women's Indoor Track and Field teams wrapped up the 2010 Great West Conference Championships Saturday afternoon in the DakotaDome hosted by University of South Dakota.
South Dakota captured both titles with the women totaling 230.50 and the men with 187 points. The Highlander men placed sixth 36.50 points and the women finished in seventh.
NJIT distance runner Vanessa Escalera set an NJIT school-record finishing in the top five of the women's 800 meter run at 2:24.61. South Dakota's Emma Erickson won the title finishing at 2:17.18 setting a new Great West meet record. Michael Gurlacz placed in the top 10 of the men's 800 meter run, setting a new NJIT school-record with a time of 1:58.94. Highlanders Adam Morgan and Miguel Tlatelpa set personal-bests in the 800 meter run.
Freshman Brian Mendez placed eighth in the men's mile run at 4:30.88 while teammate Joe Ju finished with a time of 5:02.55. Senior captain Umar Saeed was third in the men's 5000 meter run. Houston Baptist's Maximo Mendoza captured the title with a season-best 15:00. Mendez added a 12th place finish.
Junior Josh Dolisca took second in the men's weight throw with a distance of (14.74m).
Freshman Ewelina Marut set a personal best in the women's 5000 meter run at 20:12.04 while teammate Catherine Carnas also set a personal best in the women's 800 meter run crossing the finish line with a time of 2:53.59.
Coyotes head coaches Lucky Huber and Dave Gottsleben repeated as Great West Conference Coach of the Year for the women and men, respectively, while senior Ramsey Fitzsimmons won Great West Conference Female Athlete of the Year for a second consecutive season. Senior Rob Gregoire was named the Great West Conference Male Athlete of the Year.
