PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Union Catholic girls 4x100-meter relay squad didn't run as fast as they had hoped, but the bottom line is that it was fast enough!
The biggest goal the Vikings had coming into Friday's 4x100 heats at the 129th Penn Relays presented by Toyota at historic Franklin Field, was to make the Championship of America final.
Freshman Maya Wyche, senior Taylor Cox, junior Natalia Thompson and senior Taylor Aska got what they came for by the slimmest of margins, running 46.32 to place second in their heat to lock up the ninth and final spot in the 4x100 COA race, which is scheduled for Saturday at 3:55 p.m.
UC, who placed 9th in the 4x100 COA race last year and ran a NJ record 45.48 on this track last June at the New Balance Nationals, are confident they will slice a lot of time off what they ran in the trials.
"If we get our sticks right and run our best we can get down to 45,'' said Cox. "We know we can do it, and I think you'll see us right up there with the top teams.''
