Highlanders Compete at Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships

Umar Saeed captures men's 5000 meter run

POMONA, NJ –
The NJIT men's indoor track and field team finished second out of 21 teams (88.7) points breaking five school records while the women shattered three records at the Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships at Wesleyan University.

 

Senior captain Umar Saeed captured the men's 5000 meter run (15:11.40) setting a new NJIT school-record. Saeed took fourth in the men's 3000 meter run (8:50.27) and seventh in the mile run (4:29.69).

 

The men's distance medley relay won with a time of (10:51.67) which consisted of Christian Baumbach, Brian Mendez, Adam Morgan and Miguel Tlatelpa.

 

Sophomore Ruben Santos finished second in the men's 200 meter dash (23.08) and fifth in the men's 55 meter dash (6.68).

 

Senior Michael Gurlacz was third in the men's 1000 meter run, setting an NJIT school-record (2:38.46).  Freshman Mendez added a fifth place finish in the men's 1000 meter run at (2:41.07). 

 

Freshman Tim Esposito set a school-record in the men's pentathlon with 2715 points.  Esposito won the fifth event, the 1000 meter run at (2:47.62).

 

Senior Josh Dolisca broke his own school-record mark of (14.73m) in the men's shot put with a distance of (14.93m).

 

Highlander Nicole Kerrison set two school-records -- the women's 55 meter hurdles (10.83) and 500 meter (1:21.52).  Teammate # Vanessa Escalera# was seventh at (1:25.48).

 

In the women's one mile run, Amanda Hefferan placed sixth (5:44.38) while Megan Higgins followed in with a time of (6:05.64).

 

Freshman # Ewelina Marut# placed 11th in the 3000 meter run (11:36.68) and ninth in the 5000 meter run (20:19.74).

Head coach Al Alonso stated, "This was the best finish for both men and women.  Both teams have been gauging their improvement at this meet."  

In 2007, NJIT's first year varsity status, the Highlanders finished 12th/19th.

 

The Highlanders are off until the Great West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on February 26-27 hosted by the University of South Dakota.
