NJIT Tabs Nine Athletes on 2009 Great West Conference All-Academic Team

Nine NJIT student-athletes in four sports were named to the Fall 2009 Great West Conference all-Academic team, Director of Media Relations Jacque Cottrell announced Wednesday.

 

The honorees were: Joe Ju (men's cross country); Cara Constantino, Iulia Doci, Daisy Gallegos, Kelsey Johnson (women's cross country); Christi Taylor (women's soccer); Sabrina Baby, Katrina Hornstein and Erica Schultz (women's volleyball).

 

Here is a list of the recipients in alphabetical order:

 

Sabrina Baby (women's volleyball; senior; Florianopolis, Brazil) …business major with a concentration in finance and marketing; cumulative GPA 3.868. ….became the first Academic All-America for NJIT in the Division I era in any sport when she was selected as a 3rd-team national honoree. … led the nation with 6.27 digs per set (608 digs in 97 sets) and as a team, NJIT, which finished with a 17-11 won-lost record, leading the nation with 19.81 digs per set (1922 digs, 97 sets) … Baby ends her career holding numerous NJIT Division I school-records – 2,301 career digs, 795 digs posted in a season (2008), 189 career services aces and 71 service aces in a season (2008). 

 

Cara Constantino (women's cross country; senior; Bloomfield, NJ). … architecture major; Albert Dorman Honors College; 3.673 cumulative GPA. … team captain.

 

Iulia Doci (women's cross country; senior; Bistrita, Romania) … management major; 3.833 cumulative GPA.

 

Daisy Gallegos (women's cross country; junior; Jersey City, NJ) … information technology major; 3.747 cumulative GPA.

 

Katrina Hornstein (women's volleyball; senior; Duluth, MN). … mechanical engineering major; 3.887 cumulative GPA; ranked third on the team with 169 kills (2.01kps). … As a team, NJIT, which finished with a 17-11 won-lost record, led the nation with 19.81 digs per set (1922 digs, 97 sets). … Hornstein has compiled 1,016 kills ranking her first all-time at NJIT since 2006 when the Highlanders started competing at the Division I level.

 

Kelsey Johnson (women's cross country; junior; Point Pleasant, NJ). …civil engineering major; 3.318 cumulative GPA.

 

Joe Ju (men's cross country; sophomore; Scotch Plains, NJ). … bio-medical engineering major; 3.86 cumulative GPA; placed 50th at the 2009 Great West Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by NJIT.

 

Erica Schultz (women's volleyball; senior; Wildomar, CA). …business major; 3.342 cumulative GPA; As a team, NJIT, which finished with a 17-11 won-lost record, led the nation with 19.81 digs per set (1922 digs, 97 sets). …playing at NJIT for three seasons, Schultz holds NJIT Division I school-record for career assists with 2,437.

 

Christi Taylor (women's soccer; junior; Hackensack, NJ) . … mathematical science major; 3.345 cumulative GPA. … appeared in 18 matches with one goal and one assist.

 

Making up the Great West academic team are 48 football players, 24 men's cross country runners, 26 women's cross country runners, 45 women's soccer players and 28 volleyball players.

 

In all, 171 Great West Conference athletes were named to the team based on a minimum cumulative 3.2 grade point average.  The athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of their respective team's contests.
