BRONX, NY – NJIT sophomore Christian Baumbach captured the men's individual title Saturday morning at the 2009 Great West Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by NJIT at Van Cortland Park.
Baumbach, from Hopewell, NJ, started off the race in the middle of the pack and finished strong, one minute ahead of Utah Valley's Jacob Buhler. Baumbach completed the 8k race in a time of 25:57.95.
Senior captain Umar Saeed, who finished third last year at the Great West Championships, placed third in 2009 eight seconds behind Utah Valley's Buhler, at 26:26.48.
Freshman Hilton Gooding and Ben Singleton finished side by side in 34th and 35th place for the Highlanders while sophomore Joe Ju took 50th with a time of 29:05.22.
Utah Valley's Mary Nothum captured the women's individual title with a time of 22:16.49. Freshman Ewelina Marut was the top finisher for NJIT with a 36th place finish at 26.27.64.
Also featured in the women's race was: Kelsey Johnson (44th; 28:35.80), senior captain Cara Constantino (45th; 28:54.73), Daisy Gallegos (47th; 30:27.64), Iulia Doci (30:32.76), Shawntel Young (31:24.24), Kayla Howell (31:34.24) and Zoey Tham (36:43.38).
Utah Valley's men's and women's cross country teams were crowned 2009 Great West Champions while head coach Scott Houle was named Coach of the Year.
Newcomer of the Year went to Utah Valley's Jason Lynch and Brooke Hodson and honored as Male /Female Athlete of the Year was NJIT's Baumbach and Utah Valley's Nothum.
