Boys Meet Recap: South Brunswick scored in 13 of the 18 events and overcame the loss of distance star Vidhur Polam (out with an undisclosed injury) by receiving several clutch performances when the Vikings edged GMC rival East Brunswick, 122-116.
Junior Nicholas Wisbeski clinched the first title for the Vikings since 2013 when he finished third in the javelin with a throw of 161-7. That gave SB a 19-point lead. East Brunswick closed the gap to six after Brian McSweeney cleared 15-0 to win the pole vault.
Several athletes stepped up for SB. Joseph Carlson won the shot and discus, Majid Howard-Baker won the LJ and was fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200, and Damarion Potts won the HJ and the TJ, and was second in the LJ. Potts, a sophomore, is the state leader in the HJ with a 6-8.
Girls Team Recap: Hillsborough, behind a sensational all-round effort from senior Kirstyn Schechter a great balance attack, and big field event points steamrolled its way to a 137.25-71.25 victory over Hunterdon Central.
Schechter piled up 32 points by winning the TJ (35-6.50), placing second in the 400 hurdles (1:03.89), second in the 100 hurdles (14.79), and she was third in the 400 (59.15). Hillsborough also picked up victories from Claudia DeRasmo in the discus (118-4), Akosua Boateng in the shot put (34-8), and from its 4x400 relay team (4:05.48).
The biggest individual winner of the meet was Adelaide Asante of North Brunswick. The senior, who is the state leader in the 400 hurdles with a 1:01.13, won the 400 hurdles in 1:01.70, finished first in the 200 with a PR of 25.40, and won the 100 hurdles with a PR of 14.75.
