Live Updates from Day 2 Of The Union County Relays

Hey all you track and field junkies out there!!!!

Wasn't Day One of the 77th Union County Relays off the chain!! Still cool to say that?? If not, the meet was lit!!! Is that better??

Anyways, there was so much smoke on the track yesterday that I'm have to hop back on the NJ Track and Field Express and take another trip over to Gary Kehler in Westfield for today's action.

In case you missed anything that happened on Day 1, here is the recap, photos, video highlights etc

There is lots of great stuff on the menu today!!!

A few big things to keep your watch on today.

Look out for The Pete Kane Classic (AKA as the boys 4x1,600). Anyone who knows Pete Kane knows why I've named the race after him. For those that don't know the story behind it, I'd advise not asking him (he won't be happy).

It happened 10 years ago today!!! It was one of the most bizarre and controversial moments in meet history. Read about the infamous re-run of the boys 4x1600 right here .

The 10th annual Pete Kane Classic this year will feature a meet record attempt by Union Catholic. The Vikings will be chasing the 4x1,600 meet record of 17:53.8 set way back in 1972 by Roselle Catholic. They have the guns to do it. It should be fun to watch Myles Plummer, Shane Brosnan, Jimmy Wischusen and Caudell Cajuste go for it.

Look out for the Minutemen in the boys 4x400 today!!!

Elizabeth wants to take over the state lead in the 4x400, and I have a strong feeling that it will happen.

Rancocas Valley is on top right now with a 3:22.65, but Elizabeth (NJ#2 at 3:22.72) has the guns to make a run at sub 3:20!!!!

Also keep an eye out for the Union girls in the 4x200!

After they blasted a sub 48 to take over the state lead in the 4x100 yesterday, the girls said they are going under 1:40 today!! Look out for the Farmers!! They are coming into this locked and loaded, and will have to run fast to beat a stacked field that includes NJ#1 Scotch Plains-Fanwood, who ran 1:42.88 at the Blue Devil Classic last Saturday.

There is also a good chance that the girls 4x400 meet record goes down!!!

Scotch Plains-Fanwood owns the state's top time of 3:49.80, so the record of 3:51.48 by UC in 2017 couldbe toast. SPF could make a run at sub 3:49 or faster!!!

The team picture looks like this -

The Union Catholic girls are in control with a 58-40 lead over SPF, and seem headed for a sixth straight title. It would take a monumental effort for anyone to knock them off.

On the boys side it's shaping up to be a great battle to the end between Elizabeth and Westfield. Westfield, which picked up wins in the SMR and the, leads with 48 points. Elizabeth, who won the 4x100 and grabbed second in the SMR, has 41.33 points.

The action starts up today with the shuttle hurdles at 4:30 p.m.

For those that can't make it to the track, have no fear, I am here.

Updates will be down below as usual, so keep refreshing and checking back for the latest.

Good luck to everyone, competing.

UPDATES

7:30 pm  One more thing that I have to add here before I go. Do you want to know what the best thing is that happened at this meet???

It's something that almost no one saw because it took place after the meet when the entire Elizabeth team went over and congratulated Westfield while the Blue Devils were celebrating their victory. That's such a great move by the Minutemen!!

Shout out to Elizabeth coach Austin Holman for running such a classy program. The culture he's developed as both the Elizabeth track and field coach and the football coach at Scotch Plains-Fanwood should be a blueprint for every high school coach. Holman coaches his athletes to be winners on and off the track and football field!!!

7:20 pm Video highlights, photos and a recap will be coming at you tonight, so check back for that.

6:45 p.m.  The boys team title comes down to the 4x400!! Westfield leads Elizabeth, 80-73 1/3. Elizabeth is favored to win the 4x400, so if the Minutemen grab the 10 points for first then Westfield needs fourth or better to clinch the team title. Elizabeth will win the team title if it wins the 4x400 and Westfield finishes worse than fourth. Got it?

4:15 p.m. A moment of silence was just observed for the legendary Ed Grant, who passed away this past Tuesday. A nice touch here, something that should be done at after track and field across this state this weekend. NJ MileSplit spent some time with Ed before his passing and put together a story about his amazing life journey.

It's very strange being at meet without Ed around.

4:00 p.m. Just rolled into Blue Devil Country. Another great day for a meet. It's PR weather!!! A little overcast with temps in the low 60's, and not much wind.
