NJSIAA Statement On Executive Order #149, Return To Sports

The NJSIAA has released a statement regarding the recent executive order, aimed to return some sports, by Governor Murphy during Friday's briefing. The live announcement had included a return date of June 22nd for youth non-contact outdoor sports

The NJSIAA statement makes it clear that, while this is a good direction for the return of sports, high school competition must follow NJSIAA reopening protocols and must be in sync with school opening plans. Which is the purpose of their recently established Medical Advisory and Sport Advisory Task Forces.

Their statement also notes that according to the official executive order high school sports activities may not resume any earlier than June 30th and must abide by the NJSIAA.

"The governor's executive order (EO #149) regarding organized sports is a positive step. Specifically related to high school athletics, this executive order makes it clear that interscholastic sports may resume in accordance with reopening protocols issued by the NJSIAA -- which, in turn, will be based on Department of Health protocols. The executive order also notes that activities related to high school sports may not resume any earlier than June 30, 2020.

"To establish a workable framework for a safe return, the NJSIAA has -- as previously announced -- convened a pair of specialized task forces. Establishing these two groups was an essential step because, given that interscholastic athletics -- unlike other levels of sport -- are school-based, they must be fully in sync with the overall return-to-school plans of our member schools."
