Immaculata Wins First, Morris Catholic Led Exciting NPB Meet

Morris Catholic girls and Immaculata boys earned hard fought team championships on Friday at the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championships. 

With their first team title in meet history Immaculata scored 55 points, James Ptack made up for 30 of them individually before adding in he was part of their third place 4x400m relay as well. Ptack won an impressive distance triple with times of 2:05.27 for the 800m, 4:34.02 in the 1600m, and 10:01.99 in the 3200m. 

TJ Harkins also put together a strong meet scoring second in the 3200m run at 10:11.55, fourth in the 1600m, 4:37.73, and fifth running 2:10.39 during the 800m just ahead of teammate Dominic Riga in sixth at 2:10.55. Michael Blandino scored four points in the 3200m as well running fourth at 10:31.51. 

In the girls championship with 38 points Morris Catholic brought home the team title in a close scoring battle with multiple teams - St. Rose in second scoring 36 and Mater Dei Prep 33 points to make the top three. Trinity Hall 32, St. Dominic Academy, 32, and Eastern Christian 31 were also in the running late. 

For Morris Catholic this was their second straight Non-Public B title and fourth Group title overall. Their only gold medal of the meet was the final event in the 4x400m where they dominated with a six second lead at 4:16.26 to seal the team title.

Senior Mia Berthiaume brought in 10 points individually placing fourth in the 400m at 1:02.13 and third in the 800m at 2:26.64. Kiersten Holdip ran fifth in finals during the 55m dash at 7.76 for a season best. Hannah Schofield clocked a 9.23 to run second in the 55m hurdles. And with important points in the field Kelsi Mohs cleared a season best 4-10 in the high jump to earn silver and eight points. 

Girls Non-Public B State Champions

Villa Walsh junior Sarah Hanifin had a strong meet winning two golds in the 1600m and 3200m, both events holding off strong runnings in Tilly O'Connor of St. Rose and Hayley Amisano of Mater Dei Prep. 

Three freshmen finished top four in the high jump with event winner and NPB State Champ Anneke Kuperus leading the way at 5-0. Just two inches under the NPB meet record, 

Grace Kellogg of Eastern Christian improved by a foot and three inches over her 2019 Group performance to defend her pole vault title at 10-03.

Ahmad Brown had a solid run to open the meet at 50.92 to win the 4x400m. He was also part of the winning 4x400m squad which ran 3:29.29 to end the meet.
