In the last 3 years, only six girls have run 18:16 or better on the Greystone course that was revamped before the 2017 season. Add Lakeland Regional's Angelina Perez to that list, which includes some of New Jersey's very best girls from the last few years.
The sophomore raced to a big win at the Greystone Invitational today, making an 18:16.1 look effortless. Teammate Abigail Horevay was second overall in 18:468.3, and their finishes were almost enough to give the Lakeland girls the win in the Small School Division. Those honors went to Bernards by a 38-39 margin. Led by junior Olivia Musum (4th in 19:46), the Bernards girls had five of the top twelve finishers and a gap of 1:24 from their top five to earn the win.
BOYS MERGE | GIRLS MERGE
The girls Large School title went to Millburn, as their 41 point tally was seven better than Morristown, winners here last year. Elizabeth Athaide of the Oak Knoll School was the top Large School finisher and fifth overall, running 19:59.6 in the 12-team field in which all teams were combined.
Lakeland had the top individual performance of the day on the boys' side as well. Senior Jesse Campoverde blasted away from a few challengers in the last mile, running 16:08 to win by eight seconds. Bernards and Lakeland finished 1-2 in the Small School division in boys' race as well. Led by senior Edward Byers, second overall in 16:16, the Beranrds boys finished 2-4-6-7-10 to get the win. Their top five average of 16:39 was the fastest of all 15 schools over the rolling grass and gravel at Greystone.
The Morristown boys, second here last year, picked up the win in the Large School division this year, 33-40 over Summit. Senior Tobias Gaynor (16:22) and sophomore Theodore Kuelker (16:27) were 1st and 2nd in the Large School scoring (4th and 6th overall) as the team averaged 16:43.
The "warrior of the day" award might belong to Warren Hansen. The Summit sophomore was near the front of the junior varsity race when he lost a shoe at the 1.5 mile mark. Undaunted, he raced ahead to win in 17:19, leading his team to a 1-2-3 sweep in the race. His varsity teammates were there for him with his lost shoe, and a celebratory hug, at the finish line.
