Watch Athing Mu Run 2:01.38 at Music City Distance Carnival

New Jersey track phenom Athing Mu had a historic performance on Saturday at the Music City Distance Carnival held in Nashville Tennessee. The junior, running for Trenton TC, competed in the Elite Women's 800m clocking a 2:01.38 for second place against a professional field of athletes.

This set a New Jersey junior class record and moves her to second all-time in state history only behind Ajee' Wilson, who ran 2:00.91 in 2012 as a senior at the IAAF World Junior Championships. Wilson had a best of 2:05.25 her high school junior season outdoors.

Even more if you go to the National all-time list Mu moves to sixth all-time joining an elite club of girls to have run under 2:02 in high school competition. This club includes: Mary Cain, Kim Gallagher, Sammy Watson, Caitlin Collier, Ajee' Wilson, and the now seventh ranked Chanelle Price.

Mary Cain holds the National record of 1:59.51 set in 2013.

For Athing Mu this is the second PR she's hit in the matter of a week. Last weekend at the Atlanta Georgia Relays Mu ran 52.41 to win the 400m dash taking over the state lead and moving up to US#5 on the season.

That 400m performance was also second all-time in state history behind Sydney McLaughlin, who posted a 51.87 at the 2016 NJSIAA Meet of Champions. Olivia Baker is now third with her 52.46 from the 2014 USATF Junior National Championships.
