Jacob Leigh appeared to have no shot at winning.

The senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood was in last place in the eight-runner 400-meter race with 120 meters left on Day One of the Union County Championships on Wednesday at Hub Stine Field in Plainfield.

But after he made the turn onto the homestretch, Leigh hit the gas and started making up lots of ground. With a just a few meters left, he moved up to second place, and then made one last surge right at the line to edge Gabriel Nash of Elizabeth by .01 and complete the remarkable comeback.

Not only did the race produce a epic finish, but it was also the fastest one-lap race in the state this season as Leigh ran a NJ#1 48.02, and Nash was second in a NJ#2 48.03
