Quarzo Drops PA#1 3200 At Baldwin

2018 was a big year for Gionna Quarzo, but if her outdoor invitational opener on Saturday was any indication, the Brownsville Area junior is in for an even bigger 2019.

Quarzo dominated a strong girls 3200 meter field at the South Hills Classic at Baldwin. She put on a show, lapping nearly the entire field en route to a state-leading time of 10:29.29. That was over a minute ahead of second place.

Last spring, Quarzo ran to the AA state title in the 3200 as a sophomore. She ran her then-PR of 10:48.19 at the state meet, but she proved on Saturday that she's well ahead of schedule with a huge PR. At indoor states, she placed third in the 3000 meters.

That outdoor states race from a year ago was a great battle with Loyalsock's Isabell Sagar. Sagar has run 10:39 in the 3200 this season, currently PA#2, so the state's top two times come from runners in the PIAA's Class AA. The stage is already being set for a great rematch between the pair.
