Union Catholic & Randolph DMRs Run Big at NBNI, Day 1 for NJ

The first day of New Balance Nationals Indoor has come and gone and New Jersey had some solid performances to start the weekend of competition. Here is the day 1 recap. 

Championship Events

We'll begin with one of the later events of the evening, the distance medley relay, where Union Catholic and Randolph ran to All-American status and top ten all-time state performances! Union Catholic finished fifth at 11:53.31 and Randolph sixth 11:53.55, the seventh and ninth fastest times in indoor state history. 

UC's attack was led off by Leena Morant running a 3:40.77, then Chidumga Nkulume, 57.43, Morgan Williams, 2:17.13, and finally a 4:57.99 by Jerika Lufrano

Randolph's Abby Loveys absolutely went off on her anchor leg running 4:48.02 over the final 1600m!! They had a great start from Meredith Finley at 3:38.24 over 1200m, then Meghan O'Malley 59.25, and Maya Wilkins 2:28.04. 


In the 5000m championship girls race Samantha Ragenklint of Monmouth Regional ran seventh at 17:56.13. She did so out of the first of two heats, finished second in heat 1 breaking into the top finishers after the seeded final completed and results were compiled. At 1600m she split 5:29 and hit the 3200m at 11:18. 

In the girls high jump championship Tierra Hooker of Timber Creek cleared 5-08.75 for eighth. She was real close on the final miss at 5-10.75! 

Emerging Elite Events

Keeping it to the top eight finishers. If I missed anyone let me know at rkellert@milesplit.com and I'll update the article. Note that Day 2 and 3 will have separate articles.  

  • Paul VI finished fourth in the 4x200m running 1:43.15, Ramapo broke the Bergen County record again running 1:43.32 in fifth. 
  • Mujeeb Ali of Elizabeth threw 58-05.75 to win the shot put! NJ#2 on the season! Red Bank Catholic's Anthony Zamarra fourth at 54-08. 
  • Zachariah Murray of Haddonfield finished fourth in the 400m running 49.24 NJ#2. 
  • Bergen Catholic seventh in the boys 4x800m 8:06.31.
  • Meet of Champs 55m dash winner Louis Akpadago of Hamilton North Nottingham sprinted to third in the 60m dash finals running 6.88. Javon Porter of Hamilton West eighth at 7.00. 
  • We had three finalists in the 60m hurdles led by Naseem Smith of Deptford in fourth at 8.05, Alix Oge sixth 8.10, and Urijah Williams eighth 8.25. 
  • Luke Rapley finished seventh in the long jump clearing 22-02. 
  • Conor Reilly over 14-10 for sixth in the pole vault. 
  • Rahway ran to third in the boys SMR with a 3:36.93. 
  • Amori Fiyin of Barringer leapt 46-02.75 in the triple jump for second overall. 
  • Dennisha Page of Woodrow Wilson, 24.42, and Shauntae Nelson of Piscataway, 24.72, ran to second and fifth in the 200m dash. 
  • Lily Orr of Rumson-Fair Haven ran 56.80 in the 400m for seventh. 
  • In the 4x400m Winslow finished fourth at 3:55.40, Red Bank Catholic fifth 3:56.05, and Timer Creek seventh 4:02.12. 
  • River Dell eighth in the girls 4x800m 9:33.14.
