The Morris County Championships on Wednesday at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility in Staten Island, NY brought some exciting finishes, wins out of unseeded heats, and overall great performances. Morris Knolls boys won their first ever indoor county championship and the Randolph girls made it three straight.
One of the best of the meet came in the form of a double between two of New Jersey's top distance talents. Abby Loveys of Randolph and Julia Trethaway of West Morris Central first treated us to a meet record duel of a race in the 1600m where Loveys won on the kick crossing at 4:53.02 US#6 and Trethaway 4:56.80 US#15. Later in the meet during the seeded 3200m they once again showed the crowd a great race leaving the pack behind and going stride for stride right down to the finish line with US#4 and #5 times. Loveys taking the win at 10:43.88 and Trethaway 10:44.12, another meet record race. The 3200m is definitely worth the watch as a chess match ensued late in the race when lapped traffic came into play. (Watch this race above)
The two meet records that were broken... The 1600m was held by Joelle Amaral of Randolph at 5:00.00 since 2011 and the 3200m belonged to Colette Richter of Mountain Lakes who ran 10:51.25 in 2012.

They weren't the only ones to throw down entertaining races in the distance events. During the boys 1600m Jared Cooper of Mountain Lakes out-kicked Mendham's distance star Jack Stanley to run 4:18.93 NJ#4 just off the meet record. Even second place was interesting as Stanley's teammate Jack Jennings pushed it for a close third, Stanley 4:21.62 NJ#5 and Jennings 4:21.81 NJ#7. (Watch this race)
Cooper came back for a strong double in the 3200m to run 9:29.15, this time for second. After a nice battle early on among the leaders Patrick Mullen of Morristown took it out and then held off a late surge by Cooper to win at 9:26.85 NJ#1. The team championships went to the Randolph girls, 82 points, and Morris Knolls boys, 45.5 points.
Randolph had victories in four events thanks to the two by Abby Loveys in the 1600m and 3200m, Meredith Finley had a great night in multiple events winning the 1000m at 3:03.58, and Meghan O'Malley earned another high jump title at 5-02 and finished 2nd in the hurdles 8.76. This makes three straight County team titles for the Randolph girls and 17 overall. See their full team breakdown right here.
The Morris Knolls boys had three winners en route to their first ever county championship. Raul Esteves took home the 55m dash at 6:65 and they picked up two wins in the field with Robert Plumb leading the pole vault at 13-0 and Christopher Tavarone the shot put with 49-09.25. It was a tight one at the end there in the team score race as Morris Knolls kept a point and a half ahead of Mendham by placing fourth in the 4x400m running 3:29.67. More Highlights
Another record breaking run belonged to Kate McAndrew of Morris Catholic with her 1:35.24 NJ#4 in the 600m. She destroyed the previous standard of 1:36.48 held by Kyra Velock of Mountain Lakes since 2017. (Watch this race)
Jack Stanley found silver in the 1600m as mentioned above but he also won the 1000m in exciting fashion running 2:37.30 after trading the lead with teammate Sam Marran who was second at 2:37.64. Stanley finished his night as a strong anchor in the exciting 4x400m finale where he almost brought Mendham back for the win, both in the race and the meet overall, finishing second at 3:28.79 to Chatham's 3:28.37. The boys 300m had 19 heats, the winner came out of heat 16 in the form of Christian Martin of Whippany Park. Martin was the outside lane in a heat lacking attendance in the lanes around him, basically running a time trial, and left everyone in the dust at 36.19. (Watch this race)
In the girls shot put Stephanie Nwankwo of Jefferson Twp threw a NJ#5 mark of 40-10.5.
