Ridge Sweeps Somerset County, Mehlhorn and McGovern Win

Ridge swept the team titles, freshman Caroline Mehlhorn of Montgomery pulled off a big upset victory, and John McGovern of Somerville captured the boys individual title at Friday's Somerset County Championships at Pleasant Valley Park in Bernards Township.

Mehlhorn continued her remarkable rookie season by running 18:26 to finish eight seconds ahead of runner-up Manon Stephen of Ridge (18:34) and 14 seconds in front of defending champion Nicole Vanasse of Pingry (18:40). Vanasse won the state Non-Public A title last year.

Stephen, a junior, led the Ridge girls, ranked No. 9 in the state, to its third straight title as coach Tim Mooney's squad placed 2-11-13-15-17 and averaged 20:29 en route to a 58-75 victory over runner-up Montgomery. Hillsborough finished third with 76.

In the boys race, Ridge , ranked No, 8 in the state, dominated by placing 2-5-8-9-13 with a 47 second compression and 16:55 average on the way to a 37-90 victory over defending champion Hillsborough. It's the first county title for Ridge since 2010. 

Individually, McGovern, who placed second as a junior last year, finished first in 16:25, five seconds ahead of runner-up James Glockenmeier of Ridge.
