Brick Memorial, Morris Hills, Holy Angels Shine at Xavier

The Brick Memorial boys were New Jersey's only winner, but the Morris Hills boys and Holy Angels girls turned in very strong runner-up performances at Saturday's Xavier Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

In the boys A race, Brandon Shymanski ran 14:05 over the 2.5-mile course to place third and lead a 3-8-26-30-33 finish for Brick Memorial, which defeated Clarkstown South, of N.Y. 94-111. Hackensack placed third with 115. Wilson Reynoso had a strong race for North Bergen, placing fourth in 14:08.

The NJ #3 Morris Hills boys had a great duel with Xavier of N.Y. in the boys B race. Morris Hills averaged 13:48 and had a remarkable 22-second compression, but Xavier rode its potent frontal attack (three runners ahead of the No. 1 Morris Hills) to edge Morris Hills, 51-62.  Xavier's went 2-3-5-19-22 and Morris Hills went 8-10-13-16.

In the girls competition, Olivia Mandella placed 2nd in 15:58 to lead Holy Angels to a runner-up finish in the A race. Kellenberg of N.Y. defeated Holy Angels, 29-63. In the B race,  Seneca placed fifth with 175 points and Trinity Hall was sixth with 180.
