Sub-4 Mile Attempt at Shore Regional This Summer

NJ MileSplit was there to record a successful sub-4 minute attempt by Travis Mahoney in 2014 at a Bennett Running twilight miles meet. Mahoney ran 3:59.31, full article here and video above.

The Shore Running Experience and Monmouth University will be hosting an elite men's mile at Shore Regional HS this summer. (Note the change of location, unfortunately the Monmouth University track construction will not be completed in time). The action will take place Tuesday, July 31st, 2018 starting with a community mile at 7:00pm and then concluding with the elite mile. NJ MileSplit will be on site to cover the action with race videos and photos.

This is a great opportunity for track fans to potentially see a sub-four minute mile in person on NJ soil. New Jersey grown talents will be participating in the the elite race: Travis Mahoney (Old Bridge '08), who we recorded running a 3:59.21 back in 2014 as seen in the above video, Rob Napolitano (Red Bank Catholic '13), and Ford Palmer (Absegami '09). All three of these guys have gone under four minutes, more on these NJNYTC Hoka One One athletes below.

The Shore Running Experience (www.shorerunningxc.com), a premier Cross Country camp for high school distance runners is proud to announce that in conjunction with this year's camp will be an elite men's mile. The mile will be held at the brand new Monmouth University Track and Field Complex on July 31, 2018.

The event will be presented by the Howley Financial Group and run at twilight with hundreds of campers and fans spread out right on the track allowing for the up close and personal atmosphere guaranteed to get us a sub 4 minute mile in Jersey!

The campers will have the opportunity to spend the first 2 days of camp with some of the nation's elite milers who will be housed right on campus. The campers will not only be able to interact with the elite milers but will be able to see race preparation and routines starting 24 hours out (how they eat, warm up, etc.)

Thoughts behind the mile:

Travis Mahoney (NJNYTC Hoka One One athlete/ Old Bridge High School coach)

-  The idea in hosting an elite mile is to showcase local talent on an elite level to as many high school athletes as possible. Most high school track and field athletes know the big names in the sport but for many it may be very hard to be relate to those athletes. The plan is to have most of the elite field being formal NJ high school runners, I think many of the campers and fans can connect with these athletes. It becomes easy for the campers and fan to relate and connect with an athlete rooted in NJ, that grew up training in the same parks, running for the same coach and chasing the same dream. Ultimately, I just want to deliver an exciting sub 4 race 20 min from where I grew up in hopes to inspire these young athletes and show them where this sport can take you.

Rob DeFilippis (Runner's High Owner, Red Bank Catholic coach, Camp Director)

The goal behind the shore running experience mile is to bring a high caliber mile to the Jersey shore and then pump in a great atmosphere with 200 plus campers and a bunch of local fans jammed in around Monmouth university's brand new state of the art track and field surface which will be freshly laid in the month leading up to the event. With the help of Howley Financial group, Runners's High and NJMilesplit, it is our goal to produce the fastest outdoor mile in NJ in years with many local Jersey athletes leading the charge.
