Hayley Horvath said last week long that she had what it took to break the state record in the girls pole vault.
The senior at Notre Dame backed up those words with the greatest pole vault performance in state history at Saturday's NJSIAA Meet of Champions at Northern Burlington High School when she cleared 13-5 1/4, which broke the state record of 13-3 set in 2004 by Danielle O'Reilly of Shawnee.
Horvath, who also crushed the meet record of 12-6, actually broke the state record twice. She first made 13-3 1/4 on her second try to break O'Reilly record, and then few over the var 13-5 1/4 on her first try to break it again.
"After I made 13-0 last week (to win the Non-Public A title) I had a good feeling I could get that state record today,'' said the Towson University-bound Horvath. "That just gave me so much confidence, and I used a bigger pole today that really helped.''
Horvath said it hasn' really hit her yet that she's the best in state history at what she does.
"It's all kind of surreal,'' she said. "And the competition is just a blur to me. The bar kept going up and I kept going over it. It was pretty awesome.''
