We are the Champions, A look at Every Group Team Winner


There were five first time champions, a state record was set, and a long winning streak continued when the 12 team champions were crowned at the NJSIAA Group Championships, which concluded on Saturday.

BOYS


GROUP 4 - Princeton picked up a 2-3 finish in the final event, the long jump, to rally past East Orange for a 81-76 victory. It's the first Group 4 title for the Tigers, its 10th overall, and its first state title since winning Group 2 in 1981.
 
GROUP 3 - Delsea racked up 49 points in the field, highlighted by the state record triple jump by Khaliel Burnett (50-9 1/2), to win its first state championship ever, 65-46 over West Windsor North. 
 
GROUP 2
- Pleasantville outscored West Side, 50-37 to capture its third title ever and first since 1999. 
 
GROUP 1 - Shabazz, led by Dante Artis (31 points), won its first state title ever with a 41-28 victory over Metuchen, Creesskill and Buena, who tied for second. 

NON-PUBLIC A - Christian Brothers Academy won a great battle with Union Catholic, 104-93, to win its third straight title and state record 22nd overall. CBA has now captured a state record 100 state championships in XC, indoors and outdoors combined!

NON-PUBLIC B - Mater Dei rolled to its second straight title and ninth overall with a 99-63 victory over runner-up Dwight-Englewood.

GIRLS


GROUP 4

Watchung Hills, third at its sectionl meet, pulled off a shocking win for its first state title as three girls scored all its points as the Warriors edged runner-up South Brunswick, 36-32 1/2.


GROUP 3

Winslow extended its Public School state record winning streak to six in a row (seven overall) with a 73-42 win over runner-up West Essex. Tionna Tobias shattered the meet record (All Groups combined) in the long jump with a 19-11 1/2 and ran on the meet record breaking and NJ #1 4x100 (47.19).


GROUP 2

Sparta, led by Gianna Macones, received points from three athletes as it scored a big upset to win its first state title, 45-42, over Demarest. Macones was second in the long jump with a Sussex County record 19-0 1/2, second in the high hurdles, third in the 100, and fourth in the triple jump.


GROUP 1

Schalick captured its first title by outscoring defending champion Highland Park, 52-49. Zyra Thomas, the New Balance Indoor National champ in the shot put, won the shot and placed second in the discus. Schalick also won the 4x800 in 9:48.46 and picked up crucial points in the jumps and vault.


NON-PUBLIC A

Union Catholic steamrolled its way to a fourth straight title, 153-73 over Paramus Catholic. The Vikings picked up individual wins from sophomore Leena Morant (800), Amaya Chadwick in the HH, Sydney Tucker (100), and from Jerika Lufrano (3,200), and smashed the meet record in the 4x100 (47.50) and won the 4x400 in a NJ #1 3:51.04. 


NON-PUBLIC B

Morris Catholic avenged its sectional loss to capture its second straight title and sixth overall. Morris Catholic, which finished third at its sectional meet (31 points behind the winner Newark Academy) placed third in the 4x400 to help secure a 64-62 win over Newark Academy.
