Mario Heslop of Franklin Twp burned up the track with one of the greatest half-lap performances in state history and the most electrifying sprint double in meet history to highlight Tuesday's Sklyand Conference Championships in Hillsborough, which was filled with record-breaking performances.
Heslop torched the oval when he threw down a NJ #1 time of 20.97 in the 200, which is No. 2 in state history and US #15 this season. Heslop narrowly missed breaking the state record of 20.93, which was set by Danny Johnson of Rahway at the 2001 Meet of Champions. Heslop, who also won the 400 in a meet record and NJ #1 47.50, broke the State Junior Class record in the 200 of 21.09 set in 1983 by Olympian Dennis Mitchell of Edgewood.
Heslop was one of many record-breaking performers in the meet.
C.J. Licata of Gill St. Bernard's, who came into the meet NJ #1 in the shot put and discus, didn't beat his season best marks, but he did smash the meet records in both the shot put (62-6 1/4) and discus (177-11).
Sydney Hawkins of Phillipsburg ran NJ #1 times in the girls 100 (11.4\93) and 200 (24.48) and broke her own Warren County records in both races, and took down the meet record in the 200.
David Bausmith of Hunterdon Central cleared a meet record 14-8 to improve his own NJ #1 mark
Although the girls 1,600 didn't produce a meet record, it did provide plenty of fireworks as four girls went under five minutes!!
Chloe Gonzalez of North Hunterdon took down two Meet of Champions winners to capture the four lapper in a PR and NJ #2 4:55.52. Nicole Vanasse of Pingry, the 3,200 winner at the indoor M of C and NJ #1 in the 1,600 (4:53.30) was second in 4:58.67. Alexa Westley of Warren Hills, the outdoor M of C winner in the 3,200 last spring, was third in a Warren County record 4:59.05. Kaitlyn Van Baalen of Ridge was fourth with a PR of 4:59.51.
In the team competition, Hunterdon Central captured its first girls title since 1996, and Hillsborough took home the boys championship trophy for the first time since 2003.
