2008 XC - Bergen County Girls Preview

RIDGEWOOD   

Ridgewood had a very tight pack last year and return 5 of 7.  Charlotte Margel is the Maroon’s top returnee; she posted a 19:56 at last season’s BMOC to place 13th.  Sarah Daly is right with Margel as she posted a 19:55 at last year’s Bergen Group A Championships. Jessica Vasquez, Sam Laddin and Courtney Schofield all return as well. Ridgewood also had a very good junior varsity team last year (placing 1st at the Junior Varsity championships last season) so it is possible that one or more of those JV runners could step up and run for the varsity. Ridgewood will be gunning for its unprecedented 25th BMOC championship.

  1. ACADEMY OF THE HOLY ANGELS

Holy Angels returns 3 runners from last year’s varsity team.  It will be lead by sophomore Jen Molke.  Last fall Molke was 10th at the Bergen Meet of Champs in 19:48, and was 5th at the Bergen Group B meet in 19:43. She also posted a 11:29.28 in the 3200 during the winter season and a 5:25.0 for 1600.  Senior Suzanna Markolovic (19:19 career best at Darlington in 2006) also is back.  Markolovic placed 2nd at the Bergen Group B race last year in 19:36 and also posted clocked a 19:51 at the State Meet of Champions at Holmdel. The combination of Molke and Markolovic should give Holy Angels up front power.

  1. RAMAPO

Ramapo returns their entire top 7 from last fall; they will be spearheaded by Senior Erin Mckenna.  Mckenna was 2nd at the Bergen Meet of Champions last fall posting a 19:04.  She did post a career best 18:52 in winning the NBIL league championship at Darlington.   Senior Caitlin Downey is also back, she placed 32 at BMOC last fall in 21:02.  Sister Megan Downey is back as well, she also broke 22:00 at Darlington by placing 44th at BMOC in 21:45.

        RAMSEY

Ramsey returns Junior Alexandra Clinton. Clinton was 4th at BMOC last season and has a career best of 19:15 at Darlington.  Ramsey also returns Diane Bain (20:11 at last years BMOC) and Katherine Wilson (21:12) Allison Fox rounds out the 4th returnee for Ramsey, she posted a 22:02 at Darlington last season.

Top 10 Individuals Bergen County XC 2008

Sarah Pagano  12   Immaculate Heart Academy

 Last years Bergen Meet of Champs winner Sarah Pagano enters the 2008 XC season as one of the top harriers in New Jersey.  Last season Sarah finished 7th at the State Meet of Champions at Holmdel in 18:39.  Pagano won the Parochial A state title and is the defending Bergen County Meet of Champs winner, claiming last season’s race in 18:25. She also won the Bergen County Group A race in 18:23 and captured the NNJIL division C league title with a time of 19:17 at Garret Mountain.  Pagano had spectacular indoor and outdoor track seasons, placing 2nd at the Meet of Champions indoors in the 3200 meters (10:43.98, #2 all time in Bergen County history) she also anchored IHA’s All-American distance medley relay team in 4:57.9. She won the 1600 meters at the Bergen County Championships indoors.  During the spring season she posted a PR of 4:56.56 in the 1600 meters en route to winning the Bergen Meet of Champions and finished 4th in the 3200 meters at the State Meet of Champs in a Bergen County Record 10:29.79.

  

Erin Mckenna    12    Ramapo

Ramapo’s Erin Mckenna has been a force to be reckoned with since arriving on the Bergen County scene as a freshman in the fall of 2005.  Last fall Mckenna placed 2nd at the Bergen Meet of Champions in 19:04, and was also 2nd in the Bergen Group A race in 19:08. She also captured the NBIL League championship at Darlington in 18:52.  Mckenna finished 6th at the North 1 Group 3 State Sectional at Garret Mountain in 20:05 and was 20th in the Group 3 State Meet at Holmdel in 19:48.  Indoors, Erin posted a 5:06.03 at the State Meet of Champions to place 3rd.  Outdoors Mckenna won the 800 meters at BMOC in 2:18.69 and posted a 2:15.34 to finish 4th in Group 3 State Meet.   She also ran a seasonal best 5:08.14 for 1600 meters at the Group 3 State Championships. 

 

 Mary Kaye Duff   12   Immaculate Heart Academy

Senior Mary Kaye Duff has been one of the best distance runners in Bergen County the last two years.  Last season Mary Kaye finished 3rd at the Bergen Meet of Champs in 19:05 and was the runner up at the NNJIL league meet for division C in 20:05.  She posted a personal best of 19:34 at SMOC helping IHA to a 4th place finish.  Duff had tremendous indoor and outdoor track seasons, consistently running personal bests in both the 1600 and 3200.  Indoor she posted bests of 5:10.98 in the 1600 meters and won the Bergen County title at 3200 meters in 11:23.0.  Outdoors Mary Kaye improved in both events as she posted a 5:09.19 for 1600 meters and 11:16.0 for 3200 meters.  For the 2nd consecutive year she won the outdoor Bergen Meet of Champions 3200 meters. 

 

Alexandra Clinton   11   Ramsey

Alexander Clinton had a superb XC season last fall, culminating in a 4th place finish at BMOC in 19:19.  She posted a personal best of 19:15 at Darlington placing 2nd at the NBIL league meet behind Ramapo’s Erin Mckenna.  Clinton also claimed the Bergen Group C championship by out leaning Pascack Hill’s Aubrey Larezza with both finishing in identical times of 19:35.  Clinton made major strides in Spring track, claiming the Bergen Group B 3200 meters in 11:34.4, and placing 2nd in the 1600 meters in 5:25.6.  She also claimed the North 1 Group 2 State Sectional crowns in both the 1600 and 3200 with times of 5:23.53 and 11:30.87 and then posted a huge personal best at the State Meet of Champions by running 11:14.83 for 24th place. 


Erin Thompson   10    Immaculate Heart Academy

Erin Thompson burst onto the scene last season as a freshman and proved she was one of the best cross country runners in Bergen all season long by having a phenomenal season. She opened eyes by placing 5th at the Bergen Meet of Champs in 19:22.  A week earlier she again placed 5th with a 19:27 at the Bergen Group A race at Darlington.  Thompson also posted a 15:52.5 at Van Cortland Park, a 20:26 at Garret Mountain and a 19:41 at Holmdel at the State Meet of Champs.  Thompson did not run indoors, but competed during the spring season and placed 4th at BMOC in the 1600 meters in a personal best 5:22.40 and had also had a personal best of 11:53.02 for 3200 meters.  Thompson is one of the best XC runners in Bergen County.

 

Charlotte Tregelles  12   Northern Highlands

Charlotte Tregelles had a solid 2007 Cross Country season.  She ran a personal best 19:48 at the NBIL league championships to finish 5th.  She also posted a 19:52 at Darlington, finishing 11th at the Bergen Meet of Champions.  Charlotte was 13th at The Group 1 North 3 State Sectionals at Garret Mountain, running 20:37.  The following week at the State Group Meet at Holmdel, she ran 20:31, placing 36th.  Tregelles really heated up during the spring track season, posting a 5:17.28 at the North 1 Group 3 State Sectional and then placed 3rd in the 1600 meters at BMOC, finishing in 5:19.42.  Tregelles was not done however; as she took off nearly 8 seconds of her 1600 PR, posting a 5:11.67 at the Group 3 State Meet. 

 

Julie Sinkovitz    11   Immaculate Heart Academy

Last season was the first XC season for Sinkovitz, and she proved to be one of the best harriers in Bergen County.  Sinkovitz was 7th at BMOC in a personal best 19:40 and also posted a 19:48 at The Bergen Group A champs, good for 8th place.  She also posted personal bests of 20:23 at Holmdel (at State Meet of Champs) and 20:44 at Garret Mountain placing 7th in the NNJIL league meet for division C.  Sinkovitz won the Bergen County Championship at 800 meters indoors in 2:17.1, #9 all time in Bergen County history.  Outdoors she bettered that mark with a 2:16.64 at the Parochial A State Champs finishing 5th.  She also posted a 59.88 for 400 meters and anchored IHA’s 4x400 relay team with numerous 58 second splits topped by a 58.0. 

 

Jennifer Molke  10   Academy Of The Holy Angels

Jennifer Molke had super freshman year and emerged as Holy Angel’s #1 runner last fall.  Molke placed 13th at the Parochial A State Championships in 20:14.  She also finished 10th at the Bergen Meet of Champs in 19:48, 5th at the Bergen Group B meet in 19:43 and 4th at the NNJIL C League meet at Garret in 20:33.  Molke then posted a very impressive winter track season by running times of 5:25.0 for 1600 meters (good for 3rd at BMOC) and 11:29.28 in the 3200 meters where she placed 6th at the Parochial A State Meet.  During the spring season Molke posted seasonal bests of 11:40.8 for 3200 meters and 5:28.90 at 1600 meters.

 

Jillian Rothschild   11        Demarest

Jillian Rothschild was the 2007 Bergen County Group B winner last fall in a seasonal best 19:30.  She also was 6th at The NBIL league Champs in 20:02 and posted a 20:26 at Garret Mountain.  She was under 20:00 3 times at Darlington   During the Spring Track season Jillian placed 2nd at in the Bergen Group B 3200 meters in 11:38.9 and 4th in the 1600 meters in 5:29.0.  She then posted times of 5:23.51 and 11:42.46 to place 7th and 4th at the North 1 Group 3 Sectional Championships.  Rothschild then posted a seasonal best 11:38.32 at the Group 3 State Championships. 

 

Suzana Markolovic  12  Academy Of The Holy Angels

Markolovic heated up during the end of the XC season last fall.  She placed 2nd at the Bergen Group B race in 19:36 to help Holy Angels claim the group B championship for the 3rd straight year.  She also placed 8th in the Parochial A state championships clocking 20:02 an improved on that time by 11 seconds a week later at Holmdel at the State Meet Of Champions, placing 47th in 19:51.  Markolovic also had seasonal best time of 20:40 at Garret Mountain, which earned her 6th in the NNJIL League C Championships.  During the outdoor track seasons, Markolovic concentrated primarily on the 400 hurdles and 800 meters. 

 

  

KEEP IN MIND THESE ARE PRESEASON RANKINGS.  THE PREVIEW IS LARGELY BASED ON LAST YEAR’S RESULTS, TAKING OUT THE SENIORS WHO GRADUATED AND ALSO LOOKING AT THE WINTER AND SPRING TRACK SEASONS THAT EACH RETURNEE HAD.  AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH TEAM’S CAPSULE WILL BE THE DARLINGTON TIMES OF EACH TEAMS RETURNEES (DARLINGTON IS THE SITE OF THE BERGEN COUNTY GROUP & BERGEN COUNTY MEET OF CHAMPIONS)
