McCafferty joined CBA's coaching ranks in the summer of 2014 as an assistant, this was after a long and successful tenure as the head coach of the Holmdel Hornets. During his time with Holmdel he coached multiple NJSIAA State Group team championships and individual champions.

In a quote from the press release CBA Director of Athletics Vito Chiaravalloti expressed full confidence in the candidate and the choice.

"Sean's reputation in the running world is second-to-none and his commitment to both his craft and his athletes is inspiring," Chiaravalloti said. "I could not be more optimistic for the future of our running program with Coach McCafferty at the helm."

Since McCafferty's time at Holmdel then he had been assistant coaching the CBA cross country team under the now retired Tom Heath. Coach Heath had steered the program for 44 years with a great amount of success including a 343 dual meet win streak, 21 State Championships, and National Championship in 2011. Heath announced his retirement in December of 2015 after one last state championship cross country season.
