On Saturday the annual Blue Gold Classic invitational held at Rosedale Park opened up the 2014 season for two New Jersey college and one PA visiter. A really tight race lead to a Rider mens victory and a TCNJ womens victory both only seperated by 2 or 3 points!
In the mens 5000 meter race Rider went 1-4-5-6-10 for 27 points compared to TCNJ's 29 team points. The rider men were led by Anthony Dentino a senior who graduated from Washington Twp HS as he finished number one overall at 15:50.
After Dentino's finish TCNJ made a big push as sophomore Andrew Tedeschi (Montville Twp HS) and freshmen Dale Johnson (West Deptford HS) kicked it in for 2nd and 3rd at 16:08 and 16:10. However the effort would be squashed as Rider answered back with a major pack run; going 4th through 6th Sam Knipper, 16:11, Dylan Hallahan, 16:12, and Danniel Belay, 16:15, put the stage down for their fifth runner Milke Pionnola who would cap off the win with a 10th place finish at 16:23. Would have been a great finish to watch as 4 key places all came across the line within 4 seconds of each other.
The girls race was just as close with the team decision coming down to 3 points. TCNJ took this one 28 to 31 over the Rider Broncs. The Rider women made a case for their own victory taking the first two spots and three of the top five. Emily Ritter won individually with a 5k time of 18:59 followed by teammate Nicolette Mateescu at 19:15, the teams 5th place runner was Megan McGarrity at 19:37.
From there is was all TCNJ making the comeback victory. The Lions took 3rd and 4th thanks to Tara Nealon at 19:17 and Carly Martz (Pt. Pleasant Boro 2012) at 19:27, but the awesome pack finish that took over spots 6-10 was too much to handle. That pack consisted of 6th place Laura Straub (North Warren) at 19:45, tied for 7th Allison Fournier (Wayne Valley) and Megan Stack both at 19:55, and tied for 9th Liz Johnson and Jullian Manzo at 19:55.
