The Merli Invitational is the unofficial start of the HS indoor track season here at the Jersey Shore and this year it’s a week earlier than last. That’s right, it’s time to start rooting for our favorite teams and speculating on who is going to do what by the end of the season.
You might say this doesn’t mean anything. You might say it’s just a ‘warm-up’ meet that doesn’t count toward any points. You might say it’s too early to tell who the frontrunners are going to be this season, but you’d be wrong. If last year is any indication we’ll get a glimpse of who the top dogs in each event are going to be right away.

With the completion of the long, but exciting, XC season this past weekend, it’s time to turn attention to the “undercover” season. Indoor T&F starts in earnest during the 10 days before Christmas with meets throughout the state and at the NY Armory.
The slate of Indoor events kicks off on Thursday at Drew University with the O’Leary Lid Lifter (4:30pm). Named for coaching legend Jack O’Leary, the Lid Lifter is the first of an extensive slate of meets at the Drew facility.
Once again, New Jersey will provide a long list of excellent marks on the track and in the field.
Brett Johnson(Sr. / Ocean City) and
Robby Andrews (Sr. / Manalapan) have already been invited to compete in the HS Mile Run at the prestigious Millrose Games. Morristown sophomore
Nlck Vena (Morristown) will undoubtedly pick up where he left off in the Shot Put. Who will step up to challenge the super soph now that rival
Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains-Fanwood) has moved on to college? Voorhees standout
English Gardner is sidelined for the season after a freak knee injury (playing football), but the girls sprints will be extremely competitive with 11 returners having run 7.3 or better for 55m. Boys and Girls distance events return long lists of runners who will threaten records all over the place. All in all, it will be a very interesting winter season.
NJRunners will bring as much action as possible with results, rankings, pictures and features. Have a Great Holiday Season!

PORTLAND, Ore. – Normally we see a stoic Fayetteville-Manilus squad unfazed by success, already on to the next challenge. Not this time. This time they made room for tears and hugs. And more tears. It’s not that none of the other races mattered. It’s that each race was another step climbed; another step toward its third-straight national championship. It was another step toward an ever-evolving stage of excellence.
