History at Holmdel - Cheserek 14:53

The Big Stories

During the week pror to Saturday's Shore Coaches Invitational there was a lot of conversation about a proper nickname for Edward Cheserek. Now, he has one name that everyone can agree on...Recordholder. Cheserek, the phenomal junior from St. Benedict's Prep by way of Kenya took down the Course Record at venerable Holmdel Park yesterday with a solo effort of 14:53. He broke the mark of 14:56 which his good friend and now Stanford freshman Joe Rosa set at the 2009 MOC. How long will this mark stand? Given the fact that Edward's margin of victory in the Championship Race was a whopping 61 seconds and that the second fastest time on the day was 15:39 (Tim Ball / Piscataway), most likely until next year when Edward gets another shot at Holmdel. St. Benedict's is only an associate member of the NJSIAA and therefore Edward Cheserek will not be toeing the line at the Group Championships or the MOC in November. Our loss.

While it was not a record setting performance in terms of team average or total time, what CBA did yesterday, also in the Championship Race is as or more impressive as Mr. Cheserek's record run. The Colts more than backed up their US #1 ranking with an other worldly team effort yesterday. Consider this, after Cheserek's 1st place finish, the Heath/Bennett juggernaut went 2-3-4-5-6 to "15 the field". Throw in their 6th and 7th runners at 11&14 and the devastation is complete. A team average of 16:08 portends a big drop to the 16:05 team average record, which CBA set at last year's MOC.
