"10 Questions With"...Tyler Gibbons

Tyler Gibbons, a senior at Ridge HS in Basking Ridge, has started his season off with a bang. In his opening race, he ran to a second place finish at the Randolph Invitational. He then found the winners circle the following week eith the win in the Senior Race at the NJCTC Magee Class Meet with the fastest overall time of the meet. That win earned him the Athlete of the Week award for w/e 9/17. Idle last week in preparation for the Shore Coaches Invitational on Saturday, Tyler took time out to tackle NJRunners' "10Questions"
NJR What were your thoughts as you hit the track at Warinanco Pk. On Saturday?
TG When I hit the track, I felt really good. I didn’t know my time at that point, but when one of my coaches yelled out “run for time”, I turned it up. I had no idea that I was near that time. I looked at the clock once I finished and I was like, alright I can deal with this! But I’m excited to see what’s next, and I only look to improve from this!
NJR What was your highest mileage week during the summer?
TG During the summer, the highest we hit was around 65 miles.
NJR Describe the training week between the Randolph meet and Bernie Magee.
TG Nothing really significant was different between the two meets, besides the fact we had a dual meet on Wednesday. But we maintained our normal mileage, and just built off of everything we have done so far.
NJR Do you have a prerace routine or superstition?
TG I wouldn’t say I have a superstition, but I have noticed that every time I feel like I’m having a bad day, I do pretty well. Kind of odd, but it works. But in all seriousness, a couple hours prior to the race I’ll think through the entire course and think where I could work the straightaways or downhills.
NJR What do you like to do when you’re not running? TG For the most part, I’m pretty consumed with running and school. But besides that, I like spending time with my family and friends.
NJR What is your favorite class in school?
TG My favorite class is English.
NJR What is your least favorite workout?
TG I like workouts! Even though some of the workouts are tough, I always feel like it’s worth it.
NJR Who is the person you would most like to meet and why?
TG Chelsea Handler. I can not get enough of her.
NJR What type of college program are you looking for?
TG I’m keeping all my options open for now. Over the next couple of months I’m planning on doing some visits, which will give me a better gauge as to what I want. For college I don’t have that many requirements I just want a good education and good athletics.
NJR What is the one word that describes you best?
TG A good one I would say would be Motivated. I’m really pumped about what the rest of the season brings, and will work as hard as I can. I expect a lot from myself, so I’m going to do whatever it takes to get faster.
