Jordan West Launches a 203-06 in the Discus

Jordan West of Rahway finally got the bomb in the discus he has been looking for when he sent the saucer soaring 203-6, No. 6 in state history, to crush the Group 3 meet record at Saturday's NJSIAA Group 3 Championships at Northern Burlington in Columbus.

West, who crushed his previous personal best of 192-6 by 11 feet, shattered the Group 3 meet record of 198-9 set in 1999 by Terrence Glover of Hamilton West, and took down the Union County record of 200-1 set in 2002 by Gabe Gonzalez of Elizabeth.

West's 203-6 is also the best throw by a New Jersey high school athlete since Sam Mattis of East Brunswick unloaded a state record 218-4 in 2012. Mattis won the NCAA discus title in 2015 for UPenn.

The University of Tennessee-bound West, now No. 12 in the U.S. this season, also won the Group 3 shot put on Friday with a 63-11 1/2, owns a PR of 65-6 in the shot put.

West, who owns two indoor shot put Meet of Champions titles and one M of C discus title, will be favored to win both the shot and discus at the Meet of Champions next Saturday at Northern Burlington.
