Brie Oakley of Colorado became the first girl to break 16 minutes indoors for 5K on Friday night running 15:55.75 at New Balance Nationals.
The National Champion took off from the field well before she completed her 5:04 opening mile, and would rank US#3 with her 3K split of 9:30. With the crowd cheering her home the rest of the way as she closed her historic run that gap became even greater and almost amassed to a minute margin of victory. She is now the fastest high school girl to run the indoor 5K and ranks fifth all-time when including outdoor performances.
The previous record was held by by Weini Kelati of Heritage (VA), who ran 16:08.83 at last year's New Balance Nationals Indoor.
Oakley is scheduled to run the 2 mile Sunday afternoon, and after today's impressive performance, if it wasn't already known, she is most definitely the favorite heading in.
